Steve Ballmer tried to prevent Munich from moving to Linux

Steve Ballmer tried to prevent Munich from moving to Linux

Munich, Germany city, it's not only one of the largest cities in Europe, but is also one of the first cities which had decided to abandon the Windows operating system, and the transfer of all the computers to the Linux system, in a large project with more than 15 thousand computers.

The plan of this migration, has begun since the last decade, and that the transition to a distribution called LiMux distribution official in the city of Munich; has served as evidence that open source products are able to replace the Microsoft products.

In spite of this, however, that this is faced considerable opposition, not only from internal officials, but also by organizations abroad, claiming that the move to open source may not be a successful investment.

Perhaps one of the biggest opponents, he was the "Steve Ballmer" (Executive Director of the above Microsoft Corporation), who is responsible for Microsoft's business in the city of Munich, when he decided to dispense with Windows.

An article which was published on opensource.com website, and citing information provided by the "Peter Hoffman," the head of the project LiMux, the Steve Ballmer himself decided to travel to Munich to discuss the mayor to convince him using Microsoft software instead of open source.

- Hoffman says:

Steve Ballmer has tried to convince the mayor that it would be a bad decision if you go to open source, it is difficult to manage and adopt it.

But some members of the City Council gave him a strong response, saying :

How a person thinks, even if he is from a giant company, could have come here and simply, believing that he could change our decision?!

What happened after that, was very funny, especially in the skills of Palmer in negotiation; Hoffman adds:
He was president of our municipality is prepared to hold a meeting with Steve Ballmer, and because English is not his native language, he asked the translator "What I'm saying if you do not have the right words to say to him?"; Replied the interpreter: "Be quiet, and after finishing his talk, little thought then say, "what can you offer us is not it?" and then during the meeting, the head of our municipality has nothing to say to Palmer, except to repeat the words, "what can you offer us is not it?" several times, and years later, Palmer has deeply impressed by the extent of the difficulties faced in the negotiations. "
In the end, Munich decided to turn to the Linux, and Microsoft has lost one of the most important battles in history; it is clear to us now evident that Munich is perfectly fine without Microsoft products.

Windows XP look and Linux save the old PCs

Windows XP look and Linux save the old PCs

The end of support for Windows XP is leading many to wonder what to do, and there are many people who would like to keep their computer and simply change the operating system. The advice in these case is often to install Linux , and to make the transition less traumatic than we think now. A new theme for Lubuntu : it's called Lubuntu XP with Three Flavors that make this distribution almost identical to XP.

Lubuntu is an Ubuntu "light" , and therefore particularly suitable for computer now especially for those born with Windows XP. Like other versions of Linux , however , its appearance creates some concern to those accustomed to Windows for a lifetime.

Then why Lubuntu XP Three Flavors is interesting : the operating system is always Lubuntu of course, but those who came from the Windows Xp will feel at home straight away because it will regain color scheme , background, and even the menu icons.

An inexperienced computer user could easily swap Lubuntu for XP , and even those who know the differences might not notice the "exchange" passing quickly in front of a monitor. It would be worthwhile to do a test by installing "Lubuntu XP" to see if you notice the changes.

For the installation, it would be better to have someone expert, or at least not a complete fool . You have to download and install Lubuntu , first of all , and then add the theme Lubuntu+XP - there are others themes besides the one mentioned in this article. These things are not difficult to do, just do some search online and you will find what you look for .

A things done the old PC could find a new life and serve its owner for a long time , which would be good for your wallet , the environment and for the open source community - which would gain a few new users. All happy then , except perhaps Microsoft - which probably would prefer to sell a new license of Windows 8.

Windows 8.1 Adds Unity-Style Search Feature

The next update of the system Windows 8 - which is what is known as Blue or 8.1 - adds a new search experience to the desktop, Ubuntu users will are already familiar with this because it is similar to the existing one in Ubuntu (Unity).

Windows 8.1 inbuilt feature called Windows Search to provide search results and not just the results of local applications , files and settings on your computer , but also from the Internet and social networking sites ; resembles the Unity Dash in Ubuntu .

While Microsoft does not create something away from what in Unity , it is fair to say that Ubuntu was the first operating system that has made the equation : " Find anything , anywhere ," a key part of the desktop.

- Microsoft says : " You can see everything you can do on your computer in one part , you can be running applications , and operates music , and even bring the results of the Web ."

There is an additional resemblance which is: that the Unity interface displays search results in the application browser  (DASH) , which also benefits from property Unity previews ( Unity previews ) to add more information and procedures , and in this context, Windows 8.1 has a new feature similar called "Search Heroes ".

Unity aims to do something similar with another new feature Smart Scopes , which aims to find what you 're looking for and then shows you the results that match with it.

Because Microsoft has a full search engine "Bing" not to mention a wide range of media content sites , there is no doubt that the results will be incredibly accurate .

The most important point in this issue is that Ubuntu has proven itself among its competitors through this feature .
