Crochet Amigurumi Pony Pattern — Horse & Unicorn

A child’s bedroom shelf changes the moment a plush crochet pony takes its place on it — curly mane tumbling over soft chenille, big round eyes staring back with that particular kind of toy sincerity that only handmade things have. This intermediate amigurumi pony pattern works up into a sturdy, poseable little horse with detailed hooves, a sculpted muzzle, and a lush loop-stitch or spiral-curl mane. Want a unicorn instead? A simple horn swap and a spiral mane transforms it completely. Either way, you’re making something genuinely worth gifting.

The body is constructed from a flat oval foundation that grows in the round, with the legs joined directly into the body during assembly rounds for a seamless, professional finish. Expect to spend a focused afternoon on this one — the construction is clever, not complicated.

Grab your hook and your favorite chenille, and let’s make something beautiful.

Materials Needed

  • Main body yarn: Bulky plush/chenille yarn, approx. 100g / 120m — approx. 75g used for the body (color of your choice)
  • Contrasting yarn (optional): Small amount of plush yarn in a second color for hooves and muzzle
  • Mane & tail yarn: Fluffy or brushed yarn (any yarn with a hairy or loopy texture works well — Lanoso Single, YarnArt Tango, or any similar fluffy yarn)
  • Leg accent yarn: Smooth medium-weight yarn (such as YarnArt Mink), held double, in a color matching the mane or hooves
  • Face detail thread: Black and white fine yarn or embroidery thread for eyelashes and facial embroidery
  • Strong thread: For sculpting/cinching facial features
  • Hook: G-6 / 4 mm
  • Safety eyes: 18 mm, 1 pair
  • Head joint: 35 mm joint disk set (2 disks + cotter pin) for a rotating head, OR one 35 mm button joint for a sewn-on head
  • Fiberfill: Polyester stuffing
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle / tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Note: If you substitute yarn with a different weight or yardage, adjust your hook size and notions proportionally.

Abbreviations Used

  • BLO — Back Loop Only
  • ch — Chain
  • dec — Decrease (invisible decrease recommended)
  • FLO — Front Loop Only
  • hdc — Half Double Crochet
  • hdc-dec — Half double crochet decrease worked across a 3-hdc shell, closing all loops together
  • hdc-inc — 2 hdc in the same stitch
  • inc — Increase (2 sc in same stitch)
  • MR — Magic Ring
  • sc — Single Crochet
  • sl st — Slip Stitch
  • SM — Stitch Marker
  • 3-hdc-cl — 3 hdc worked into the same stitch (shell cluster used for knee shaping)

Pattern Notes

  • This pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
  • All pieces are worked in a continuous spiral (no joining, no turning) unless specifically noted as turning rows.
  • Gauge is not critical for amigurumi, but your fabric should be firm enough that fiberfill does not show through. If your stitches feel loose, drop one hook size.
  • Stitch count is given at the end of each round in parentheses: (##)
  • Safety eyes are inserted between Rnds 5 and 6 of the Head — do this before the head is too closed to reach inside.
  • The head joint is installed between Rnds 11 and 12 of the Head, centered on the underside. Insert it before closing the neck opening of the Body.
  • The back of the body is closed with a separate Back Panel section worked after the main body rounds are complete.
  • This pattern includes both a horse version (loop-stitch mane and tail) and a unicorn version (spiral-curl mane and tail with a horn). Instructions for both are provided in the Mane & Tail section.

Fasten off and use the yarn tail to close any gap around the joint pin. If sewing the head on instead, work only the first 6 sc of this round, then fasten off and leave a long tail for seaming.

Back Panel (Body Closure)

Re-attach yarn to the back opening left by Rnd 12 of the body.

  • Rnd 1: 4 sc, dec, 19 sc, dec, 4 sc, dec, 2 sc, dec, dec, shift SM. (33)

  • Rnd 3: 13 dec — work until the opening is fully closed.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail to cinch and close any remaining gap.

Head

For a two-tone muzzle, begin with contrasting color yarn and switch to main color at the end of Rnd 3.

  • Rnd 8: [6 sc, inc] × 4, 14 sc. (46)
  • Rnds 9–12: 46 sc each round. Insert the joint disk between Rnds 11 and 12, centered on the underside of the head. (46)
  • Rnd 13: [6 sc, dec] × 4, 14 sc. (42)
  • Rnd 14: 42 sc. (42)
  • Rnd 15: [5 sc, dec] × 6. Stuff the head firmly now, paying extra attention to the muzzle area. (36)
  • Rnd 16: [4 sc, dec] × 6. (30)
  • Rnd 17: [3 sc, dec] × 6. (24)
  • Rnd 18: [2 sc, dec] × 6. (18)
  • Rnd 19: 9–10 dec — work until the opening is fully closed. Fasten off and pull the tail tight to close any remaining gap.

Mane & Tail — Horse Version

Work the mane and tail using loop stitch (extended pulled loops) worked directly into the head and along the back of the body. Continue adding loops until you achieve the fullness you want.

Mane — Unicorn Version (Spiral Curls)

Use fluffy yarn held single.

Chain the number of stitches needed to span from the horn base to the neck. The sample uses 23 ch. Place a stitch marker in the 23rd ch, then ch an additional 25.

  • Spiral 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work down toward the marker: 24 hdc-inc, sl st into marked ch, sl st into next ch.
  • Spiral 2: Ch 31. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work down: 30 hdc-inc, sl st into next ch.
  • Spiral 3: Ch 37. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work down: 36 hdc-inc, sl st into next ch.

Continue adding spirals — each one 6 ch longer than the last — until you reach the first ch of the original 23-ch foundation. The number and length of the shorter opening spirals can be adjusted freely.

Tail — Unicorn Version (Spiral Curls)

Use fluffy yarn.

  • Spiral 1: Ch 32. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work down: 30 hdc-inc, sl st into next ch.
  • Spiral 2: Ch 31. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work down: 30 hdc-inc, sl st into the very first ch of Spiral 1.

Repeat as many spirals as needed to achieve your desired fullness. Fasten off. Sew tail to the back of the body.

Unicorn version: Attach or glue the horn between Rnds 11 and 12 on the top center of the head.

Assembly

  1. Sculpt the face. Thread a long doll needle with strong thread and use it to create surface indentations across the muzzle and around the eye area. Pull the thread firmly to define the features, then anchor and hide the thread inside the head.
  2. Attach the ears. Position both ears on top of the head, evenly spaced. Sew in place using the yarn tails and a tapestry needle, stitching through the folded base of each ear for a secure hold.
  3. Embroider the face. Use black thread to embroider eyelashes and eye outlines. Use white thread for any eye highlights. Keep your stitches even and work from the outside of the eye toward the inner corner.
  4. Attach the mouth. Center the small mouth piece on the lower muzzle and sew it down using its yarn tail.
  5. Attach the nostrils. Position one nostril on each side of the muzzle. Use both yarn tails to anchor each one, then thread the tails to the inside of the head and tie off securely.
  6. Attach the mane and tail. For the horse, the mane is worked directly into the body — no sewing needed. For the unicorn, sew the completed tail piece to the back of the body, securing it firmly with several passes of the yarn tail.
  7. Weave in all remaining ends.

Tips & Tricks

  • Work tight for amigurumi. Your stitches should feel slightly resistant as you pull through — if fiberfill is visible through the fabric, your tension is too loose. Drop to a 3.5 mm hook if needed.
  • Nail the invisible decrease. Insert your hook through the front loops only of the next two stitches, yarn over, pull through both front loops, then complete the stitch as normal. This keeps the decrease nearly invisible from the right side, which matters most on the body and head where the fabric is visible.
  • Stuff the legs through the body opening. The pattern instructs you to stuff the legs at Rnd 8 of the body. Use the eraser end of a pencil or a stuffing tool to pack the legs firmly from the top before the opening narrows — this is your only good access point.
  • Getting the hdc shell knee right. Rnds 9–10 of both sets of legs use a 3-hdc shell and then a hdc-dec to create a subtle knee bump. The hdc-dec in Rnd 10 must close all three loops of the previous shell in one motion — work slowly through this stitch the first time to make sure all loops are caught.
  • Mane fullness. For the horse version, the density of the loop-stitch mane is entirely in your hands. A double row of loops down the center of the neck looks elegant; filling the entire neck gives a wilder, shaggier look. For the unicorn’s spiral mane, adding more spirals of the same lengths (rather than continuing to increase) creates a dense, fluffy cluster — experiment before committing.
